Summarize a Word document on your own device
Drop a DOCX on zeng.ist and you get one brief: a TL;DR, the key points, every date, amount and action, and a line per document. The file is read in your browser, and on desktop Chrome, Edge and WebGPU browsers the summary is written there too. Free, no account, up to 20 documents at once.
What happens to a Word file
A DOCX is opened on your device and turned into plain text with its structure kept: headings stay headings, lists stay lists, tables become rows. That structure is what lets the brief say which section a point came from.
Tracked changes are read as the final text, comments are ignored, and images inside the document are skipped. If the substance of a file is in its pictures, add those pictures as separate images and they will be read with text recognition.
Older .doc files are not read. Save them as .docx first, which every current word processor can do.
How to do it
- Drop the .docx on the card, or click the paperclip and pick it. Related documents can go in the same run.
- Write the task if you have one: turn these notes into an email, list the action items, compare these two versions.
- Press the arrow and read the brief. Copy it out with the button at the top of the result; nothing is stored for you.
Good to know
- DOCX only; .doc and .pages files are not read, and .rtf is read as raw text. Plain text and Markdown files are read as they are.
- Up to 20 files per run and 50 MB per file.
- A blank task gives a general summary. A specific task gives a specific brief.
- The result label says whether the run stayed on your device or used the cloud fallback.
Tips
- Meeting notes: ask for decisions, owners and dates, and you get a list you can paste into a follow-up.
- Drafts: ask what is unclear or missing rather than for a summary; the model reads critically when told to.
- Choose Short for a one-paragraph brief you can send on.
Questions
Does the document leave my computer?
Only on the cloud fallback, and then as extracted text that is relayed and dropped. On a browser that can run a model, which includes desktop Chrome and Edge and any WebGPU browser, nothing is sent.
Are headings and tables understood?
Headings, lists and table rows are kept as structure when the file is read, so the brief can refer to sections and the model sees a table as rows rather than a jumble.
Can I summarize several Word documents together?
Yes. Drop up to 20 in one run. The brief ends with one line per document saying what each contributed, and you can ask for a comparison instead of a summary.
